Mother's Day
By Community Friend

It is soon to be Mother's Day in the United Kingdom . Mother's Day falls on the 4 th Sunday of Lent and also exactly the 3 rd Sunday before East Sunday. This year Mother's Day in the UK falls on the 2 nd March 2008.

The origins of Mother's Day seem to differ and those cynical ones believe that it is just made up by the card shops so they can make some extra money between the Valentines Day cards and the Easter Cards - the same can not be said for the celebrations in America . This is unfounded as it is widely believed to date back to the 16 th Century where families would return to the churches of their mothers hence reuniting children with their mothers. Churches still have Mothering Sunday services centred on families and Mary the mother of Jesus.

In America Mother's Day was pushed forward as a day of peace for women against War. It lands on the second Sunday in May. The first officially recognised Mother's Day was in 1914 to show support for those mothers that had lost their sons in the Great War. Soon after the commercialisation of Mother's Day began in America the meaning of the American Mother's Day changed so much so that Anna Jarvis, the who campaigned to get the day recognised and supported, started fighting against it as it was making money and not bringing awareness to the plight of many mothers that had lost sons in the conflicts.

The commercialisation has taken over so much with days like Mother's Day in America that they have a term called Hallmark Holiday that belittles the days in question.

To make the best of your Mother's Day the Community Friend Team recommends picking up the phone or jumping in the car and going to say "hello" to your Mum. Take her a bunch of flowers and a box of chocolates or simply cook a meal and let her put her feet up for the day. For the many that have lost their mothers over the years now is a time for remembering the happy memories that you and your mother had together.
