The Wilduck Cafe, Shireoaks, Nottinghamshire
By DWT
One of our aims in retirement was to go out for breakfast either after taking photographs of the dawn, or beforehand. Neither happened, of course: getting up early really isn't in our genes, so we decided to have breakfast before going out to take photographs of the noonday sun!
Port of call was the WilDuck cafe, which had been recommended to us by a business friend who sometimes uses it for meetings. Located in the centre of the Shireoaks Triangle, it's an easy place to find, just look for the windmill (a very modern one), go into the office block adjacent and climb the stairs (or use the lift).
The interior isn't what I'd imagined - it's really very attractive with modern furniture, beautifully carpeted and very spacious. Orders are placed at the serving hatch and food and drink is freshly prepared and brought out to you when ready.
The first time we called my wife had scrambled egg on toast and I went, naturally, for the full English breakfast. Both were absolutely delicious - everything cooked just as we like it and consisting of top-quality ingredients, the bread being notable as I believe it was made in-house. Our only criticism was that the meals were served on cold plates. Food of this quality deserves to be served on hot platter!
The WilDuck is certainly an establishment I'd use again and again, with good food at reasonable prices, and it's certainly the place to set you up for the day's photoshoot!
As a postscript my wife, a friend and I dropped in for coffee today; the chocolate brownie was out of this world!
